Rainbow - licious

rainbow - licious

Last year one of my goals in knitting was to learn to knit socks. Ummm.....never happened! So that goal moved into 2012. As of yet, I haven't even attempted socks. Doing the heel, and gusset and all that stuff scares me!

I really want some rainbow stripped knee high socks. I have the yarn, just need to swallow my fear and...

Just Do It!!

So all my sock knitting peeps, please share with me what you think is an easy pattern for a new sock knitter that will show off all my lovely rainbow stripes! Pretty please....with sugar on top! I REALLY want these socks!

To check out more yarny goodness click the pics below for WIP Wednesday and YarnAlong. You won't be disappointed!

Oh...I also guest posted today for Akhila @ the Crafty Homeschool Mom. Check it out.

  1. Oh my , that's a yummy yarn!!
If you never have knitted socks before, you could just make them a plain pair of knee high socks. With a cuff in ribbing and the rest in st st. That will show off the beautiful colours :)
The heel is not so hard when you just have found the type you like to knit. So I guess you'll have to knit some pairs before you find that out ;)
I prefer a short row heel for me and the kids. I don't have to pick up stitches. But hubby needs a larger heel so I must knit one with a heel flap...

    Here's two patterns :)

  2. OMG I think I just died and went to yarn heaven...where did you get that yarn I neeeeeeeed some!

I'll find out which pattern I used for my socks and let you know because it was easy peasy. The heel wasn't nearly as complicated as it looks.

  4. My favorite sock pattern is not linked up on ravelry. However my best tip is to knit with five dpns. Four hold stitches and one to knit with then the dividing of the heel flap (top down) is easy!!

  5. pretty yarn. I like you have put off socks, I took the plunge and did some baby ones, they turned out ok. Cast on an adult size pair, have knitted about half of one and got bored.........

  6. I refuse to knit socks: have you *seen* what happens ?? It's obsessive and addictive :-)

  7. For that gorgeous yarn I'd stick to a plain top down ribbed sock or a plain stockinette sock. I'm a fan of ribbed socks myself because they ALWAYS fit.

The thing about the heel flap, turn and gusset is that it's hard to explain or to visualize how it works. The key is not to overthink it; just do exactly as the pattern says. If you're nervous, then thread a lifeline or two.

You CAN DO IT! Go on!

  9. I love this pattern, I have always been afraid of socks too, but they were a good way to start http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/africas-socks and also I like the stitch on the ankle, is waaarm. Love that rainbow yarn you have.

  11. OMG...I thought I was the only one afraid of socks. I will sooner knit a sweater than socks!
I have also made my personal goal to knit a pair of socks this year. Good luck.

I love knitting socks! This is the updated book I learned SO MUCH from:

Once I done swooning over this rainbow yarn, I am going to add your blog to my Google Reader! :)

  14. I got started with Knitty's universal toe-up sock: http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer06/PATTuniversalsock.html

It's a bit more like a recipe or sock guidelines because you figure out your own gauge with whatever yarn and needles you want to use, then plug numbers into this pattern, so you get a custom-fit sock. It has short-row toes and heels, so no gussets or picking up stitches to worry about (short-rows work better with stripey yarn, too). The trickiest bit for me was the crochet cast-on and getting both wraps on the double-wrapped stitches.

I don't have a good knee sock pattern to recommend. I've made knee socks once and I just sort of made it up. I worked toe-up and once they were long enough to reach the base of my calf, I started increasing at the center back until they fit around my calves, then I knit a mile of ribbing so they'd stay up.

Good luck on your sock adventure! I think they're just the best things ever. Once you start, you may not be able to stop.

  15. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/-216-beginners-lightweight-socks was my beginner sock pattern but the simple sock recipe is great, too. Good luck! Once you're work hand-knit socks you won't want to wear any others - prepare to be addicted. And I have that same yarn, and am planning to make a simple pair of socks, too
